❄️Rug up in a winter (picnic) wonderland

I get it! As the temperature drops, we as a group of sun-loving, outdoor-living people tend to retreat in to the warmth of our homely four walls.

Let me tempt you to winter more in the glory of our naturescape. Let’s face it, we are lucky there aren’t many days we have to change our plans due to weather in Western Australia, but what do we do if it is too wet or windy? We simply change the venue. Somewhere with a bit more shelter above and around us, more protection from the wind, closer to the car park.

So a reminder why Picnics are good for our soul and mental health.

* Our wonderous large backyard of a State has so much to offer in views and outdoor locations from forest to beach, and in Winter they change colour, textures, sounds and smells. Being amongst nature blows out the stress of a week at work and rejuvenates the goodness within.

* Being together with someone with no digital distractions enhances good, strong conversation. Whether it’s one on one with someone special or a group of friends whom you don’t see often, a relaxing, no time-limit picnic is the perfect way to reconnect.

* Food eaten outdoors is fun! Whether you’ve all shared the load with yummy treats or enjoyed a no-stress grazing board provided for you, there is something exciting about sharing delicious goodness in the fresh air.

And now some ways picnics in Winter can still be just as good with minimal extra planning.

* If it’s cold, pull out the scarves, beanies and gloves but pack a few rugs, blankets and towels. Use a tarp or similar underneath your picnic blankets to keep the moisture away and use the blankets and towels for extra layers.

* If you need shelter, most parks have a gazebo or similar. A big umbrella is always handy just in case! Use the blankets and towels as warmth on seating and throw one over the table too! Checking out the wind direction can make a huge difference to your warmth.

* Don’t forget the kids! They’ll run around more in the cold and rain than in the blazing sun. Pack a ball or suggest a nature treasure hunt. Some adult participation will get you all warmed up.

* Insulated shopping bags or picnic baskets can be used to keep food warm, as well as cold. Imagine flasks of soup with freshly baked warm bread, or coffee and pre-made toasties and pastries. A hot chook and a winter salad or even a cheeky spiced mulled wine.

* If you’ve planned your day on the worst weather day of the year, don’t cancel! It’s OK to move it indoors. There’s a romantic cuteness to throwing a blanket on the lounge floor and having a picnic together or even spreading out on the deck with your friends and watching the weather roll by.

Ultimately, we believe picnics should be fun from start to finish and with a little planning, you’ll be the king or queen of your next picnic and everyone can enjoy your day! Remember to pack the camera because whatever the weather you’ll want to capture the memories.

Until next time, relax and enjoy everyday.
